Biography
Tom
Stephan was born and brought up in upstate New
York. After moving to London ten years ago to
study film, he wanted to recapture the vibe created
by Junior Vasquez during his clubbing days at
NY’s Sound Factory. He released The Revolution
under the Superchumbo moniker last year, prompting
a flood of remix offers, including Missy Elliot,
Kylie and Basement Jaxx. His remix of Yoko Ono
will be her
next single and is due for release later this
year; he’s also worked the Superchumbo magic
on Fierce Ruling Diva (The Sound Factory classic
was originally retouched by Moby) and it’s
Tom’s new mix that has stormed into Pete
Tong’s cool cuts chart. And old friends
Xpress2 came straight to Tom for a remix of ‘Muzikizum’.
But don’t think Tom’s become a slave
to the remix. With a production rate that makes
ants look lazy, he's ready to unleash new track
‘Irresistible’ (available in September),
a blistering twisted tune to cement his position
at the forefront of dance music. Hot on its heels
comes the Superchumbo artist album, due for release
in September on Loaded in the UK, and Twisted
in the US.
The defining high of djing for Tom remains playing
live. Weekends at Tribal Sessions with an up for
it crowd plastered in war paint and feather head-dresses,
or his own London nights, Roach at Turnmills and
Tank at certifiable gay club Crash, both launched
this year, give him the opportunity to play up
to five hours of his inimitable brand of twisted
house. As Superchumbo is Portugese for “super-
leaded”, his fans have now taken to calling
themselves Leadheads.
Tom Stephan's transatlantic, twisted sound is
an inimitable, seamless blend of deep tribal and
funky beats, a journey into the darker side of
dance music. He’s signed to the newly revived
legendary Twisted label in the States, and to
Skint mother company Loaded in the UK.
