Chris Johann
Niemeyer - product of the "Charm City"
also known as Baltimore, Maryland. Introduced
to the piano early by his jazz loving parents
- Chris quickly learned to appreciate deep and
complex rhythms. At 16 he picked up the saxophone,
and his curiosity for music only grew. His early
musical tastes tended to be very far reaching
and eclectic and he still retains that in his
work today.
During college, he maintained a radio show on
WBOR featuring contemporary electronic and dance
music, and frequented nearby cities like Toronto,
Chicago, and Detroit to continue building his
record collection. He threw the first underground
dance party in the history of his college, and
arranged several other events featuring out of
town talent over his remaining time there. At
that time, he was influenced greatly by the sounds
of the original music of Terrence Parker from
Detroit , which changed his approach to piano
playing from that point forward. In school Chris
quickly linked his love of international language
and music and was off to Russia to sample the
culture. Impressed with Moscow's deep love for
U.S. house and garage, Chris established and maintains
contact with top promoters in Moscow, Izhevsk,
Perm, and several other Russian cities. He is
currently working to establish booking for Russian
Djs in the States and US DJ's in Russia. As a
musician and DJ, Chris deftly blends tech and
soul, anthem and tracks- always in the mix never
content to rest on his many accolades. As a promoter
he has orchestrated a variety of events throughout
the northeast including: SubBase < WBOR Radio
>, Jaguar House, Rock Da House, Warmth, OPENHOUSE
Sundays, and the two year residency with PUREfridays.
He decided to move to Philly with his future partner
Mike "Moovs" Montgomery to develop his
promotional and DJing talents. Shortly after setting
up shop in their basement, he found a local venue
called Aqualounge (home of the legendary PUREfridays),
suitable for the soulful moods of music they intended
to reintroduce to Philadelphia. Chris and Mike
played a sound system called Illasound featuring
Mike on the decks with Chris playing a classic
vintage synth, the Yamaha SK50D. For almost two
years, they brought in the best underground house
djs the city had recently seen, including Norm
Talley, Mike Grant, Mike Huckaby, Paul Johnson,
Greg Norwood, Jojo Florez, Fred Everything, Charles
Webster, Slam Mode, MKL, Hesohi, and many others.
Chris made his international debut on a three
week DJ tour in Russia for New Years 2002, playing
in cities such as Moscow, Nizhny, Perm, and Izhevsk.
On his return, he held a residency with Philly's
legendary Randy Flash at L'hexagone where he continued
to expand his knowledge of house's roots in soul,
disco, and funk. During this time, he made several
guest appearances at Culture Tuesdays with residents
Chris Purtell and Mike "Moovs" at the
world famous Fluid nightclub.
In 2003, Chris returned to Babylon for a second
residency in Izhevsk, including a visit in never
played before Kostroma, Russia. As the second
part of a monthly Philly festival held at Babylon,
he had the opportunity to play with hometown DJs
Sean O'Neal and Chris Purtell at the beginning
and end of his residency. Upon returning home,
Johann immersed by studio endeavors, has made
several appearances at popular after hour spots
such as 12 Steps Down and Lounge 125. Stay tuned... |
