Carl Michaels
started his career in dance music at about 16
years old, when he bought two gigantic speakers
and some turntables, and solidified himself in
the bustling punk-ass-suburban-kid house party
scene. Jump ahead a few years, and Michaels found
himself a wide-eyed young raver with a mission.
Being a frequent customer at 611 Records (the
local hot spot for records), Carl was able to
talk owner Nigel Richards into letting him do
odd tasks for random cash. He had also begun throwing
cute little raves under the suggestively named
Dubldipt productions moniker.
In the midst of a fruitful run at the record store,
Carl made several achievements. He helped launch
a successful CD label at 611, and started a new
deep house imprint called Society Hill. In 1999,
Carl released DiscoDubHouse, a compilation of
groovy disco house gems that borrowed from such
luminary artists as DJ Sneak, Roy Davis Jr, The
Stickmen and King Britt to name a few.
During all of this, Carl started the PhillySoulCollective
with partners Willyum, Kevin V and Jamie Johnson.
This posse soon became synonymous with funky deep
house and their parties gained in popularity.
Thus was formed The Philadelphia Experiment
a four man, four turntable free-for-all that became
the saving grace of the crew. To this day, this
event (now monthly at Silk City Lounge) is one
of the defining nights in Philly house, and even
rivals the reputation of King Britt's wildly popular
Back 2 Basics parties, at the same location.
Through all of his achievements, the one thing
that fueled the energy was an unmistakable sound.
Michaels created a sound that was matched by few
funky , deep, wild, raw, emotive. And most importantly,
the sound brought a party, and that is just what
people do when Carl plays. He has played with
and hosted a roster of world-class talent including
Boy George, Derrick Carter, Paul Oakenfold, Carl
Cox, Luke Solomon, East Coast Boogiemen, Jane's
Addiction, Dj DanSthe list goes on. He also took
part in a 26-city tour with DJ Dayhota, called
2 Bitches On Tour.
Today, Carl focuses on keeping the energy flowing
and the momentum at a steady pace. He has been
doing that since day one, and the future holds
nothing less. |
